There are a variety of freeware software programs that can be beneficial for your classroom. Below are reviews of software programs you can download and use instantly. Enjoy!

BMI Scale 1.0
This freeware program calculates your Body Mass Index in an amusing way. You don't even have to install BMI Scale--just run it. Enter your height in inches and weight in pounds, then press the Calculate button. The program will tell you your Body Mass Index, point to your place on the spectrum from Too Thin to Obese, and name a celebrity or two who shares your designation. If you're too thin, it tells you to eat a cheeseburger. If you're way to the right of the obesity scale, it just says, "Oh, Dear God." The program is designed to make you feel better about your BMI, no matter what it is. The calculations are correct, too, regardless of all the jokey features, so if you're interested in your BMI, you could try this. ~Download.com Review

Ways to Save!

Consumer! Not Using Coupons May Be Dangerous to Your Wallet's Health!During the technology workshops I conduct for teachers, I often am asked where to get the best buys on certain items. It's amazing how much money you can save by shopping online. One of the tricks I share is to use "coupon codes". If you aren't familiar with coupon codes, don't be alarmed, they're easy to use. Vendors place codes online with discounts. Last year, I purchased a bible online for my daughter and paid $3.00 for shipping after I used the coupon codes. It's amazing how it can work to your advantage. Here's the trick. Go to your favorite search engine and type in "coupon codes". Walla! You will get a listing of web sites that offer coupon codes. Some of my favorites are listed below.

  • Coupon Mountain
  • Dealsdujour
  • Deal Catcher
  • Online-Coupon-Codes

    How To Use Coupons?
Coupons are provided in two formats:

    1. A Direct Clickable Link
If your coupon offer has this, the prompt will be to "click HERE!" Doing this will take you directly to the merchant's coupon page where you will pick up the coupon automatically, and continue to shop. The coupon will be in your cart when you check out from the merchant's store.

    2. A Coupon Code: If a coupon code is provided, COPY the code down exactly. Then click on the link to the merchant, this is usually the merchant's name, and go shopping! When you want to check out, there will be a prompt somewhere along the way for coupons, coupon codes, special offers, special discount codes, etc... When that prompt appears in your shopping cart, simply enter the coupon code and continue.

With both types of coupons an important tip: BE SURE YOUR DISCOUNT IS REFLECTED before checking out!

  • Testing for Toy Safety

The following tips will help consumers choose appropriate toys: (CPSC)
  • Do the Toilet Paper Roll Test: Any toy small enough to fit completely inside a toilet paper roll is small enough to pose a threat of choking.
  • Select toys to suit the age, abilities, skills, and interest level of the intended child. Toys too advanced may pose safety hazards to younger children.
  • For infants, toddlers, and all children who still mouth objects, avoid toys with small parts which could pose a fatal choking hazard.
  • Look for sturdy construction, such as tightly secured eyes, noses, and other potential small parts.
  • For all children under age 8, avoid toys that have sharp edges and points.
  • Do not purchase electric toys with heating elements for children under age 8.
  • Be a label reader. Look for labels that give age recommendations and use that information as a guide.
  • Check instructions for clarity. They should be clear to you, and when appropriate, to the child.
  • Immediately discard plastic wrappings on toys, which can cause suffocation, before they become deadly playthings.
